Word Processing Using Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is the most popular word-processing application in the world and the industry standard against which other word-processing applications are measured. The latest version of the application, Word 2010, is available for both Mac and Windows computers and saves your documents in the ".docx" file format. Word can also open and edit ".doc" files created by versions of Word released before 2007. Word lets you create and format documents with a variety of templates and styles.
Formatting and Styles
Word contains easy-to-learn formatting and style tools that can be applied in seconds to change the look and feel of your documents. Formatting tools appear on the "Home" tab of the Office Ribbon and go beyond simple choices of font and text size. You can customize a variety of "Quick Styles" and apply these styles to various parts of your document, ensuring your headings, sub-headings, and paragraph text stay uniform throughout the document. Word can automatically detect outlines, numbering, and bullet points and can apply formatting automatically to make sure your lists stand out.
Graphics and Images
Word supports the insertion of a variety of graphics, from pictures on your computer to Clip Art from a massive online database. The application comes with editing tools that allow you to tweak the look of any graphics included in your document. You can apply photo effects to your pictures and place images between, above, around, and behind the text in your document. Word also comes with a WordArt creation tool that lets you bend, warp, and apply special effects to your document text.
Templates
Word comes with a variety of templates that simplify creating forms, resumes, letters, and specialized documents. If the library of templates doesn't have a format you're looking for, you can search a Template Database online or create a template of your own. Templates save you the hassle of formatting documents and applying styles over and over again. Once you've created or located a template you want to use, you can attach the template directly to a document you've already created and Word will automatically format the document according to the information in the template.
Review and Collaboration
Word features collaboration tools that let you track the changes others make to your documents and work together with others on the same document simultaneously. The review tools included with Word allow you to see all the changes made by other users during the editing process. You can also insert comments into your documents to point out areas of text without inserting additional text into the document itself. Online collaboration is a new feature in Word 2010 that allows you to upload your Word documents to the Internet and share them with other users. Documents shared through Word can be edited by multiple users simultaneously
